: In other comments: Robert, what is the mouth wash for? You want minty fresh
: breath when you're camping alone or am I missing another practical use for
: it?I get food stuck between my teeth when I eat and that causes gingevitis within an hour. The mouthwash, Listerine only, kills the gingevitis and allows my gums to heal faster. It is therefore a very practical asset. And hey, what if I encounter a couple of cute girls who happen to be paddling my way. Might as well not scare them off with bushman breath.
: A couple other things I would personally ditch...the SPF lip balm as
: you already have sunscreen listed...not a lot of space though so no big
: deal. That is just a convenient way for me to add more balm as I paddle. Often times I carry that in my pfd pocket. My lips dry out quickly and get sore, the balm helps immensely so that makes it a more personal choice.
: I would switch the spray sunscreen with the rub on kind though, as
: you get far more in the same size bottle. I don't get bitten by bugs, but
: even if I did it wouldn't be a primary concern when worried about actual
: survival, so I'd dump the Off. It will also make it much harder to hunt
: for food as animals likely won't come near enough to spear if they can
: smell that stuff. (Assumes quite a bit of time in the woods where the Off
: would probably be used up anyway I guess.)I use the spray stuff for convenience again. It covers my face easily without having to get that damned DEET on my hands, that stuff is hard to wash off and changes the way the jerky tastes.
: I'd replace the Off with a
: couple more bear bangers or flares and some dryer lint and petroleum jelly
: as extra tender for firestarting or maybe a couple more power bars. I'd
: probably remove the mosquito net as well, but that might be potentially
: strong enough to act as a fishing net so it may be a good multipurpose
: item after all. (I'm big on mulitpurpose items.)The net is a necessity in Manitoba. The mosquitos are amazingly nasty over there. While I was paddlign with Ken they were absolutely miserable so we camped only on shores where the wind kept them away. We hiked into the bush a couple of times and had to limit the hike or go anemic. I won't be ditching that anytime soon. It really doesn't take up much space and the plastic bag it is stored in has its own uses.
: I'd also add waterproof matches (even storm lighters fail and matches are
: easier than a magnesium strip) and a pocket sewing kit. You could use the
: line for fishing (if you lost your fishing line) and the needle is far
: easier for sewing yourself up than a fishing hook is. Superglue is another
: good thing to add to your first aid pack, as it will close almost any
: small cut quickly and cleanly. I'd add another 30 foot section of 3mil
: cord so you can string your tarp up with one and bear bag with the other.
: (Bears seem to be a big concern.) One other thing I might do is add a
: second space blanket even if it were just one of the
: "disposable" ones. That way you could use one as shelter and
: wrap up in the other...I carry one space blanket in the ditch kit and one in my pfd or dry top if I am wearing the dry top. I have two storm lighters. The fuel in them doesn't last long but I also carry a can of butane fuel. I think you have a point with the matches, that can takes up space. Then again, the VJ (the kayak) has so much storage space that the can hasn't been much of a problem. Bears are a problem on my long trips so I have to keep thinking about them. I watched one cross the river in front of me last year. I spotted it two days past Edmonton near Brosseau, Alberta. That was when I learned that bears actually pass through Edmonton's river valley fairly often, as often as 4 times per year if what I heard about the Park Rangers is true. They apparently keep that fairly quiet. I believe that I do have sewing kit somewhere, it just wasn't readily available when I posted the ditch kit message. I carry plenty of fishing line. 30' of cord is a good idea, I think I carried only 10' last year.
: Other than my personal preferences for meds (which I don't take) and the few
: items I listed, I think your ditch kit is about perfect, Robert. Well
: thought out and a great post to add to this group. It's small, practical,
: and very versatile which are all important things in survival gear. Thanks Frank. I think it's important for individuals to think hard about where they are paddling before prepping a ditch kit, then try to use foresight to add extra stuff that could be useful. As you say, everything should serve more than one purpose. I shall remain adamant about the knife though. I just don't want to be unprepared for those one-in-a-million events.
