I keep my campsites cleaner than they were when I got there, assuming the site was used by someone else. I always do a walk around to make sure I pickup every piece of trash I can find. Rambo??? Yo are too late to tell me not to do that. I recently read that it is better to show the bear that it is in for a fight if it attacks. I know myself and would teach it to go somewhere else. I take every precaution to avoid bears but I must be prepared just in case. Eventually I will be paddling in the Canadian High North, polar bear country. Polar bears seek out people as a food source, that's why anyone who ventures forth out there carries a good gun. The knife is not "overkill", it's a precaution that serves a dual purpose: it's a great tool, too! I never heard of a solo wilderness traveller who didn't carry a big knoife. I do not paddle in areas where I can run for help, I have to help myself and that is how I choose to do it. When I finally shell out the $$$ for a gun, then I will carry both, especially around Hudson bay. You'd be nuts not to.
