Robert,
Wouldn't learning to side-surf offer a more of an advantage? Even if you could climb completely into a kayak, it will still roll when the right wave comes along. Are you looking for strategies to handle rougher seas or to rest while at sea?
For resting I use the static brace technique but it is somewhat equipment and certainly flexability dependent. Alternatively we will raft up and lean over each other's boats. Ed Gillet (solo long crossing fame), I believe threw out a sea anchor (afixed to his bow to stay bow into the seas) and climbed down into his custom made double (enough room to lay directly on the hull, butt & torso).
This doesn't sound like something for mere mortals,
cheers,
jed
: I was thinking of the technique where you lie down enough so that your butt
: is on the floor of the kayak. The idea is that with the center of gravity
: that low, the kayak will slide down a wave face if a steep one comes
: along, rather than capsizing. Given the poor defensive posture you would
: be in, I was wondering how likley that would be, as opposed to a capsize.
: I would like to know this before trying it for real.
