: Since your only concern is bears on land, why do you feel the need to carry
: the knife on your PFD? Wouldn't it be safer and more convenient to keep it
: stored in the boat and carry it only when you land? While I agree with your logic Brian, the knife being stored on the boat and not on his PFD wouldn't be much help as part of a ditch kit.
Like I said in my other post, I don't think a knife that size has very many practical uses. For bears, making a lot of noise and careful food prep and cleanup are far more effective than thinking a knife will help you. That's the point of the bear bangers after all, make noise and frighten the animals before they're close enough to slap your face off. I agree entirely that thinking you will survive a bear attack using a knife is far more likely to get you hurt worse by pissing the animal off.
Bears attack for two reasons, food and fear. If they attack for food, just let them go at it...it's really not worth your life. You can survive without food for a very long time if you're forced. If they attack for fear, playing dead will 99.8% of the time make them leave you alone as they will no longer be fearing for their (or more likely their cubs') safety.
I'd replace the knife with this (I have the SL3 and it's great.) It will give you a safety whistle, magnesium strip, knife and penlight mount all in one small unit:

That will also allow you to remove the magnesium firestarter as you will already have one attached to your knife. The belt clip has worked very well for me but it has a lanyard point as well.

Robert, what is the mouth wash for? You want minty fresh breath when you're camping alone or am I missing another practical use for it? A couple other things I would personally ditch...the SPF lip balm as you already have sunscreen listed...not a lot of space though so no big deal. I would switch the spray sunscreen with the rub on kind though, as you get far more in the same size bottle. I don't get bitten by bugs, but even if I did it wouldn't be a primary concern when worried about actual survival, so I'd dump the Off. It will also make it much harder to hunt for food as animals likely won't come near enough to spear if they can smell that stuff. (Assumes quite a bit of time in the woods where the Off would probably be used up anyway I guess.) I'd replace the Off with a couple more bear bangers or flares and some dryer lint and petroleum jelly as extra tender for firestarting or maybe a couple more power bars. I'd probably remove the mosquito net as well, but that might be potentially strong enough to act as a fishing net so it may be a good multipurpose item after all. (I'm big on mulitpurpose items.)
I'd also add waterproof matches (even storm lighters fail and matches are easier than a magnesium strip) and a pocket sewing kit. You could use the line for fishing (if you lost your fishing line) and the needle is far easier for sewing yourself up than a fishing hook is. Superglue is another good thing to add to your first aid pack, as it will close almost any small cut quickly and cleanly. I'd add another 30 foot section of 3mil cord so you can string your tarp up with one and bear bag with the other. (Bears seem to be a big concern.) One other thing I might do is add a second space blanket even if it were just one of the "disposable" ones. That way you could use one as shelter and wrap up in the other...
Other than my personal preferences for meds (which I don't take) and the few items I listed, I think your ditch kit is about perfect, Robert. Well thought out and a great post to add to this group. It's small, practical, and very versatile which are all important things in survival gear.
