Sea Kayaks Techniques Bulletin Board
For what purpose?

In the old days (before bulkheads were standard equipment) it was possible to lay down inside the boat. Maybe this is the technique that you are wondering about?
Alternatively, if you lay on your back deck, shoulders square to the deck and firmly planted on it, you shoudl be able to lay your arms in the water and find a significantly stable position.
Possibly the best solution is the greenland-style balance brace where you lay your torso on the water and just float! Of course this takes a certain amount of flexibility and is more difficult with some boats due to high-volume, seat backs and such.
I agree with Mike Scarborough that slouching is a limiting substitute. It wrecks havoc with your ability to rotate and brace effectively. I am continualy amazed at how many people slouch as part of their normal paddling posture.
Good luck!

: I read in probably more than one kayaking book that if you become very tired
: in a long crossing you can be very stable in rough seas if you lie down,
: or scrunch down as much as you can. I tried it in small waves, but seemed
: more unstable in that I rocked back and forth very quickly without the
: ability to dampen the movement with my hips. I also had very little
: ablility to brace, and a roll would have taken a lot of time to set up
: from there. It did not look too good to me- has anyone given it a real
: test??
