That knife is a final defense against bear attacks. When I paddle along on my cross-Canada trip I paddle solo and in bear country. I have to face the risk of both black and grizzley attack. Even on the prairies there is the risk. When I started my trip I began in the heart of black/grizzley breeding grounds. The day I started there were five sightings of both kinds. I personally spotted one mamma and two cubs right where I would be paddling.
I have bear bangers and flares (they canbe effectively used on bears) but no pepper spray. I depend on awareness and bangers to keep them away. Except on the river of course. Last year I almost caught up to a bear swimming aross the river; I tried to catch up to it to get a good pic but it got scared and swan faster, I had to use my big zoomba lens to get its picture. On land, however, I would not approach the bears.
The bottom line here is that if a bear is gonna bite you, it's better to use a big ass knife than it is to let it enjoy a peppered meal: me! The knife is a miliatry knife that is long enough to get the bear in the heart if I have to fight it. The knife also makes a great tool.
