I had my dealer drop off a Barracuda and a Catalina for eval. After two weeks of trials, I settled on the Catalina for its great handling in tight spots. 90% of my paddling is coastal, and I would not think of taking the Catalina on a long crossing.
The Barracuda however, would be right at home in any waters I could imagine. The nose is a little blunt, necessitating a back lean in oncoming waves, but the payback is a longer waterline and superior tracking.
The Catalina was surprisingly tender for a boat advertised as 23" wide, but waterline width is probably closer to 21" with me (160lb) in it. Ballast in the hatches makes a huge difference in stability. I would say the Catalina's best qualities are its light weight, speed and handling. Downside is the blunt bow and lack of length.
