I posted info for Roy about the contents of my ditch kit that I made up for my long kayaking treks. I have also included images of my pfd with all emergency attachments and of my dry top with its attachments. The link below takes you to the list and image link.
For those who don't know, a ditch kit is a small bag attached to the person of a kayaker who is travelling in the wilderness. In the event of a mishap where the kayaker is separated from the kayak, the kit contains items necessary to improve the odds of survival. I attach my kit to the shoulder straps of my pfd. You will also see other images of what I stash in every pocket I have on my pfd and dry top. I leave no pocket unfilled since anything I take along in case of emergency that I can stuff into a pocket will help me during emergencies.
A responsible paddler always wears a pfd, especially during difficult paddling sessions whether that difficulty occurs due to harsh water or weather conditions. A well equipped pfd/drytop/ditch kit combo will drastically improve your chances of survival in emergency situations. Bear in mind that my setup has been prepared for river travel along the North Saskatchewan River in Canada. Emergency setups for ocean paddlers will have variations of my setup. Everyone has different ideas about emergency kit setup and these differences will want different options.
The choices you make for equipment will also be based on knowledge. For anyone wanting to make up a kit, I strongly suggest you read as much as possible about wilderness emergency equipment and wilderness first aid techniques. In this way you will learn what equipment and supplies you need to have for your own personal preparations.
I hope this helps.
