: Randy - you know the author? I glanced at her book a while ago and was curous
: about what type of boat she uses. Do you happen to know? Was it a one-off
: custom design? A conversion from a canoe or kayak hull?Yes, neighbors and friends. They are some of the most knowledgeable and skilled avalanche experts in the states for their business and row in the summers.
Jill rowed a Necky Tofino modified with a rowing setup for years and Doug paddled his kayak. They both row now and I think use modified Necky Amaruks.
Necky does the modification to make it a rowing hull.
A group from anchorage went in a few years ago a bought an order of eight or so. I don't know if Necky keeps modified doubles around or if they wait until they get an order or request.
They use the "Row-wing" drop in rowing rig; have found it stands up a bit better than the "Oar Master." Years ago, Jill used a Oar Master in a Klepper double for a while because the Row-wing is a little too wide.
She can smoke two healthy men paddlers in a comparable double but jokes about her neck creaking from looking over her shoulder for many years.
The double can carry about 600 pounds of gear for very extended trips. Daily mileage can definitely exceed paddling by probably half again as much. With the oars out for bracing, Doug and three other men could not upset
her double.
I am getting more intrigued in trying it out, bought a beautiful pair of hollow shafted oars from her and am working on building my own rig.
I am thinking of using a S&G double hull, making my own deck and well. Am wondering about a three piece boat that could be a paddling double or rowing single depending on which center sction you used.Randy
