Sorry to hear about your back.
I'm not a doctor nor do I play one on TV, but I am building a kayak. . . . (so you know how professional my advice will be)
Current medical thinking is to not lay in bed, but to move around, walk a bit, remain active if possible--but not to the point of pain, which I'm sure rules out kayaking for a while.
I got nailed a couple of years ago in a rearend collision. Went to the Dr (not much help 'take it easy' need some pills?), chiropractor (better helped a lot, though some of it was nonsense but harmless) finally after a couple of months I did some Pilades with a personal trainer. That proved to be the best 'physical therapy' though you don't want to try it if you are really suffering. Its really important to do the Pilades moves correctly, but it totally finished healing my back. Good luck to you.
