OK, I'm probably walking into a minefield here, but I would get an opinion from a real medical professional. I've had friends seriously hurt by chiropractors. I know I am making a gross over generalization, but I don't trust them.
As for paddling with a bad back, I have a moderately bad back. No disk damage (yet), but lumbar pain just that same. And paddling is the best thing I can do for it.
Of course, "bad back" can mean many things and just because the twisting helps me doesn't mean it won't be bad for you. But for me, the times I have the most back pain are when I don't paddle often enough. Frequently after the actute phase of an injury has passed, the best thing I can do for my back is very slow, very careful rolling. The full range of motion coupled with the support from the water does wonders for my back.
