Brenda, how old are the children? If they are really young a canoe may be an easier way to start the whole paddle sport thing. A triple kayak also works but that is a big sluggish boat (very stable though). If they are teenagers they will probably enjoy paddling their own kayak. I suggest you find a place to rent kayaks or canoes and give it a try first. Most shops will let you apply rental fees torwards a purchase. If you need to accomodate 4 it is a big investment so it would be good to find out what kind of a boat fits your needs before you invest. We have paddled with our children since they were born. One is a college freshman now and the other is a 6'3" teenager. Paddling has provided us with great family activities.
