Yesterday evening I noticed the coastguard doing random checks on boats at our local boatlaunch so I parked and went over for a chat. I asked the lights question and their response was pragmatic. They acknowledge the rules but went on to say they would rather a kayaker was visible and using an all round white light was fine with them. They said they would rather spend a few minutes checking out a bobbing white light than filling out the paperwork on the dead kayaker who wasn't seen. To quote "none of us will ever give you crap for being too visible". They quickly added, "but please don't use your strobe for visibilty". So, I readily agree with all those who correctly interpret the rules and I have the greatest respect for the knowledge and experience of some of the contributors. My only wish is that the language and tone could have been kept at the usual friendly level. This board is all about sharing, not one upmanship. I have learned a lot here and from time to time I may have something to give back. In the meantime, keep all that good stuff coming. And Nick, thanks for a great forum.
