Yes, Local Rules Do Exist... The bottom line is to, yes follow the regs, and, yes, to avoid other boats. The regs state we can have lights like a sailboat so, in my book, that's the safest thing to do and the easiest to teach to the average kayaker. If we look like a real boat in the dark than so be it... IT'S IN THE REGS!!!
So, unless you have something more constructive to say, posts like yours are, in the end, worthless, you are simply looking for a forum to toot your horn, to show off your ego. Guys like you scare me because you would probably run someone over because they have the wrong light on and defend your actions by pulling out your books. More common sense and less attitude will go a long way in working with people to have the correct equipment.
In all of this discussion it appears that the CG needs to do a better job of not only informing the public on what is needed, it also needs to inform it's own units, manufacturers, and probably most of all, all of the retail outlets for kayaks in the country.
: Brian is correct that some inland lakes "May" have location
: specific rules such as this all white running light at 360, but these are
: exceptions and very rare for most paddlers and paddling locales which are
: International or Inland Rules. I agree with Karl that many local law
: enforcement types do not understand the rules. Where I live they are
: street cops who do time on the boat, and have modest training at best. At
: our local coffee shop they ask me for clarification. The blue light thing
: is wrong according to District 13. If that was a commissioned/enlisted
: USCG person sanctioning that, then I'd be very suprised. More likely a
: mis-informed volunteer with the auxiliary. And just because some company
: makes an all round white kayak light, doesn't mean it's legal. And to Kris
: I say that I'll put my knowledge of this stuff up against any of ya'll. Do
: whatever you want. Take the exams then re-read all of this. If yer so
: smart and I'm so wrong, go and test yourself! Let me know how you do. Oh,
: but to test you have to have a lot of sea time, which of course you can't
: get if your an internet expert. What do I know. Maybe ya'll can teach me
: to paddle as well. Thanks for setting me straight! I'm guessing that most
: CG personnel really don't give a crap about kayakers, and probably won't
: hassle you regardless of what stupid light configs you use. In the absence
: of specific local regs (rare for most of us) the Colregs or Rules are the
: last word. Whether you accept that or not is your call, but they are the
: last word, and I for one have to (by oath) adhere to those. In the end the
: joke is on me for trying to inform people.
