Mr. Hamilton,
Your message here is a flame. Messages like this are not appropriate, especilly when you are not correct.I did the research and actually went to the GC station in NYC to make sure I was complying and making them happy.
I did some research and found documentation that shows the proper lighting for smaller vessels. Check out this site:
http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/fed_reqs/equ_nav.htm
If you will notice, this is from the US Coast Guard site...
For those of you that don't want to go there I will quote here:
"Vessel Under Oars (kayaks and canoes fall under this reg...)
If your vessel is under oars, then it should display lights for a sailboat (Figures 3 or 4), if practicle. As an option, your vessel may carry a flashlight or lighted lantern that can show a white light in sufficient time to prevent collision. (see Figure 7)"(Fig 3 shows sailboat with Green/Red showing forward on the actual Bow and White showing back on the stern; Fig 4 shows same sailboat with green/red/white mounted on the top of mast.)
(Fig 7 shows a rowboat with a strong flashlight.)
I actually pride myself in knowing the regs, esp. working as a guide...
Working in NY Harbor, we stayed to the sides, were very alert, we know the water before we take out clients, and we err on the side of safty and had lights according to the regs.
Once again, the site address is:
http://www.uscgboating.org/safety/fed_reqs/equ_nav.htm
the pictures make things very clear.
Thanks for listening...
: About reading and complying with Rule 25 of the COLREGS?!!! I'm starting to
: believe that 99% of kayakers are just idiot mariners. Read the f-ing rules
: and obey them. It's that simple people. Turn off the computer and get a
: copy of the Rules, and obey them. Stay the heck out of traffic areas at
: night! Stay out of the shipping lanes at night or in fog. An all round
: white light is NOT ok when you are moving. It means you are at anchor.
: Drifting is moving! Sorry, but I get soo tired of ignorance, especially
: when the information is so readily available. Guides should know this
: stuff! I'm a kayaker BTW.., but for the most part wouldn't admit that
: among a group of sea folk.
