IMO, the best place for a knife is in the day hatch. I've tried several and have found that:
- Folders are too slow and difficult to manipulate with gloves on.
- Sheath knives invariably fall out of their sheath at the worst possible moment, such as during a rescue.
- I've never needed either of them when sea kayaking, at least not on the water.
I now keep a Benchade Model 6 H2O Rescue hook on my PFD and a Swiss Army knife in my day gear. I have yet to need the hook for anything other than clearing a jammed skeg (using the back of the hook) and I feel a lot safer knowing that if it comes out of its sheath, it can't slice/puncture me or my gear.
