Diagonal run = longer ride + faster ride. Also, you should be running from the breaking portion of the wave, and this will cause you to travel diagonally. On some waves, when you sense the ride is almost over, you can cut out by doing a reverse sweep stroke on the wave side, thus avoiding the soup zone entirely...this must be started before the wave breaks, with a longer boat having less of a margin than a short surf boat.
