One thing that is not obvious to most people trying to surf boat wakes is that the wave velocity is faster than the group velocity of the wake. What this means is that the constituent waves in a boat wake move from the back of the wake to the front. They build up behind the wake (inside the V), progress through the wake and then die out.
What this means if you want to surf a wake is you want to catch it from behind. If you catch the biggest wave, you will quickly surf out the front. Instead, wait for the whole wake to go past and catch the growing waves at the back of the group. In this way you can catch the full run of the wave and get a longer ride.
: I don't know about surfing "surf", but last weekend I was trying my
: hand at riding powerboat wakes. If I went perpendicular to the wave-front,
: I quickly outran the wave, and left it far behind. When I went diagonally
: to the wave-front, I was able to keep the wake right at my stern, for a
: nice long ride.
