Woody,

Sounds right by my experience. I once heard that 80% of the power comes in the first 10 or 12 inches of the stroke and I usually go test these statements for myself. To test this one I tried ascending a small drop on a river. I would charge upstream onto about a 6 inch rise and then lean forward and apply quick powerful short strokes to ascend the drop. With longer strokes I would only match the rivers energy and ended up maintaining position until exhausted. This is sometimes referred to as pissing on the trailer hitch.
Now that I trust this information experientially I can catch and surf more waves with a quick short burst of shorter strokes. Once the paddle gets behind the waist it can only be doing one of two things. If it is going straight back it starts to pull the stern deeper into the water with little or no forward energy. If it is out to the side it starts to draw the stern toward the paddle which is a turning stroke. Hope this helps clarify things a little. Give it a try and see what you think.
