In Response To: Kayak Cart (Ian Johnston)

: Hi All,

: Can anyone recommend a good kayak cart? I need something that is very strong,
: small enough to fit into a hatch (wheels and all), as well as being easy
: to assemble and dis-assemble.

"Strong" - this is something I don't understand. To tow 50-60 lbs hull with 50-60 lbs cargo over sand or pebbles you don't need a strong cart. What you need is wide wheels. They should be at least 9" in diameter and 2" thick.

The only suitable commercial cart I know is Primex (sometimes called Roleeze) with 10" * 3" pneumatic wheels (= always carry a pump), cost about $110 and a little bit bulky even with wheels detached. The only self-made suitable cart that I know is the one that I've made. Photos were posted at Folbot forum http://www.folbot.com/forum.html (-->Accessories and Gear --> T-cart). Wheels are shown 6" * 1.5" from "stern cart". Handles (tarp poles) you won't need if you don't have to carry 180 lbs or so of folding kayak, sail and food through airports, bus-stations, customs etc :-). Later I modified leg supports to work as bag supports as well (i.e. protruding up), added clear vinyl tubes and straps on T's, and replaced 6" * 1.5" wheels with 9" * 3" golf-cart wheels with bearings - ideal for empty kayak on nearly any terrain, but foam tires fall off the rim under heavier loads. Dissembles into 3 parts - 2 T's and axle, plus wheels. There is a good source of wheels http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?PAGECOUNT=1&sortby=sequence&categoryId=7380&catalogId=4006970&storeId=6970&langId=-1&PHOTOS=on , but they didn't respond to my inquiry about weight, bearings and some other details, and looks like they don't ship to Canada. So, I'm still looking for 8-9" *not* pneumatic wheels with a tire better than in those shitty golf-wheels.
