ditto what all the others said. doing lots of paddling, even tho' frustrating, will get you to better perceive what and when's all going on.
3 other assists in addition to what the others said (as i find that correction is too late or excessive when waiting till the opposite stroke gets to the stern):
-to assist in sweep effectiveness i'll shift down the shaft right into more of an extended paddle to get more leverage.
- as mentioned before, because catching the motion early makes a huge diff, i'll sweep right out from the bow immediately the paddle gets in water.- and the best of all (but you'll only recognize as you get able to recognize the turn momentum - thru practice), before i even change paddle side, i'll abruptly (very very subtly but abruptly) stop the paddle motion mid paddle just as soon as i recognize the shift. that stops it before it before it even gets started.
the best practice is to paddle as slowly as necessary to be able to control in a straight line for a decent distance,(throw in some obstacles for control and interest as well) and then up the speed a little and stay in control, then up more etc. but start very very slowly and evenly to get to understanding what and when it happens.
