: After many surf landings and launchings with a loaded boat, the gelcoat on my
: keel line and a bad spot under the rear bulkhead had pretty well worn off.
: Last year, I put a new layer of gelcoat on the wear parts, but it has now
: worn off as well. So I am now putting on a fiberglass strip on the wear
: places. When I took a good look at the hull, there is a lot of general
: wear as well. I am not too worried about the thousands of scratches, but
: soon the fiberglass will start to show and wear.
: Is it possible to get the hull back to new gelcoat condition?I had a bad gouge in the gelcoat of my hull repaired a couple of weeks ago. The dealer put Saran wrap over the liquid gelcoat to keep it airtight. (This promotes better curing, apparently.) He then spread the gelcoat under the Saran wrap until it was completely smooth. He said I should wet-sand the edges when I removed the wrap a week later, but the join was so smooth I didn't bother. There is a slight difference in colour between the patch and the hull, but apart from that, it's a perfect repair. You'd have to look very closely to see it.
