A few words from the middle coast

Hi David,
Nice to read your left coast update. Sounds like big changes in your life. Congratulations! One of my stepsons is an actor in Vancouver and loves the variety of work options out there.
Thanks for your defence of Great Lakes conditions. Toronto harbour has provided some memorable times, like the October when an autumn gale piled up opposing clapoutis in the western gap and a guest paddler went over in that "popcorn machine", as Erik called it. Or the time two novices capsized in the middle of the very busy channel outside the H'front slip and the captain of a tourboat refused to stop, even though he was bearing down on people in the water. We all have stories to tell ...
You could always ask the BC folks about lightning. At the wilderness first aid course last weekend, one of the trainers said that most guides who spend serious time in Ontario backcountry have been hit by lightning at least once. And sure enough, one of the participants in the course had taken a hit. I even encountered a thunderstorm paddling at Sandbanks in November, when it's (normally) safe to assume that thunderstorms are over for the winter.
The harbour is ice-free now and we will consider paddling this weekend, although we've got a Plan B (brunch at the Rectory Cafe on the islands).
Don't know if you've heard, but the school will have to move this spring to the other side of the slip, right next to the marine police(!). There are plans for a new waterfront park on the H'front land. The disabled sailing school is also making the move, so heaven knows how we'll all fit into that tiny space. Don't suppose the marine police will want to give up their parking lot.
I want to go out west again this summer for some more wilderness paddling, but much further north than Van. :-) Must be those katabatic winds.
Pamela
