: I think the link pages are great resources for folks to read and appreciate
: them. I guess my reaction is to Mick's statement, "No discussion of
: rolling (unless you're talking Greenland style) is complete...", as
: if these guys are the last and final word on the importance of rolling and
: technique. They're not. Plenty of folks preceded them. I tend to have
: negative reactions to what seems to be "cult of personality"
: type references.: If you want one of the better references on rolling and don't already have
: it, The Bombproof Roll and Beyond, by Paul Dutky is a good one.: And why are Greenland Paddlers excluded? These folks probably epitomized the
: "roll or die" motto as much if not more than ww paddlers.: sing (who paddles ww/surf and likes greenland paddles/boats but eschews
: glorification of any.)All I meant by "(unless you're talking Greenland style)" is that I doubt that EJ or Ken Karstoff would have anything useful to contribute to a discussion on Greenland style rolling.
And sure neither EJ nor Ken would be the last and final word. But that doesn't mean they should be ignored. I own the Paul Dutky book but personally I didn't get much out of it. Maybe because I originally learned to roll sometime around 1974. But then from 1986 to 2000 I didn't do any kayaking.
Since getting back into paddling in 2001 my problems with rolling have been more about bombproofing my attitude than about technique. Even after that long break from paddling I could still roll in a practice situation but I fell apart under pressure.

That's me floundering around in the water on the end of the blue kayak ;-)
After that swim (and many more on whitewater) I did a lot of work on my roll. I made EJ's article my mantra and I took a bunch of lessons.
I recommend EJ's article because I found it to be useful. That's all.
