: Hey Sing,
: I enjoy your postings especially since I'm close in weight (140 lbs) to you
: and share your sentiments regarding the scarcity of seakayaks for the
: smaller paddler. However, I did enjoy reading through both links posted by
: Mick since I do some WW in addition to seakayaking. Both guys (EJ and
: KenK) are accepted experts in the WW kayaking industry so I think that it
: is helpful for them to post their helpful hints on the internet for
: anybody to read through.: EJ provides a good emphasis on once you obtain a good flatwater roll to
: practice everytime you paddle with a goal of practicing in the conditions
: you paddle in (moving water for the WW folks) without setup.: Ken provides a good summary of the mechanics of a C-to-C roll with emphasis
: on NOT leaning forward during or after the hip snap. I've had instructors
: tell me to lean forward to some degree during the whole roll so Ken is
: saying something different and I think more helpful IMHO from at least
: some WW instructors.: Paddle on.
: Nelson
I think the link pages are great resources for folks to read and appreciate them. I guess my reaction is to Mick's statement, "No discussion of rolling (unless you're talking Greenland style) is complete...", as if these guys are the last and final word on the importance of rolling and technique. They're not. Plenty of folks preceded them. I tend to have negative reactions to what seems to be "cult of personality" type references.
If you want one of the better references on rolling and don't already have it, The Bombproof Roll and Beyond, by Paul Dutky is a good one.
And why are Greenland Paddlers excluded? These folks probably epitomized the "roll or die" motto as much if not more than ww paddlers.
sing (who paddles ww/surf and likes greenland paddles/boats but eschews glorification of any.)
