I also find myself tilting the top edge of the greenland paddle back towards myself when I'm doing some strokes or in conditions where I need more ready support. Kind of a bracing forward stroke--part sculling brace, part forward stroke. I also am not hestitant to slide the paddle through my hands to get a more extended stroke on one side or the other. I find that in a low brace situation, where my forearms are 90 degrees above the loom, that a bit of a sculling slide across the surface (pay attention to keeping a climbing angle on blade) generates more lift in the brace. Same thing with a slap brace with the GP. It helps to slap the water at an angle, with the leading edge high, seems to me.
Like holding your hand out the car window, flat palm down, and tilting it in the wind, the wind pushes it up or down. Same with the GP blade moving through the water. That's why tilting the top edge forward a bit on the foward stroke helps add power when you're in more stable conditions--the forward tilt puts the blade on a diving angle, which buries the blade quicker, and gets you to the power phase of the stroke quicker. If you tilt the blade back towards you, it's on a climbing angle, and wants to rise to the surface.
Just my observations--it's what I love about the GP, it's just so darn versatile.
: The more I use my greenland paddle the more I enjoy it. The only time I'm not
: comfortable useing it is in rough conditions. When paddleing in rough
: condition with my euro paddle I turn the bottom of the blade foreward so
: that my paddle stroke is also a braceing stroke to give me the stability I
: may need. Is this same technique what I should do when paddleing in rough
: conditions with a greenland paddle? Or what tips would anyone have for me
: to help brace while paddleing. Thanks for any help.
