I also know a Q500 owner switching to a Q700. Took him no more than a couple minutes in my Q700 to make that decision. I have seen others online making the same move for the same reasons. Nothing against the Q500 at all. Choice depends on use and paddler.
His Q500 was the first QCC I test paddled, then a Q600 same day. You paddle IN a Q500 - you wear a Q600. I wanted that responsive feel, but a little more boat, so my decisions was easy (I also paddled about a dozen long narrow and supposedly fast boats). Their QCCs did not have thigh braces - and testing without let me know I should order mine with!
Did you get your Q700 with the thigh braces? They make a world of difference in boat control. If you didn't, sell yours (to a racer with short enough legs to paddle knees up) and buy yourself a new one!
I was purposely taking a very large step up in performance and difficulty getting my Q700, full well knowing I could be in over my head. It has proven a forgiving teacher, but also one that let's me know I still have a lot to learn.
: Hi Kris -
: Thanks for the response! It's good to hear from another Q700 owner. I think
: your suggestion about rolling is a great one, and there's still time left
: this season to begin learning. I've got mixed feelings about selling the
: Q700, and your suggestion echoed what others have suggested, too. Learn to
: roll it. One 700 owner told me he'd traded in the 500 for a 700, just so
: he could roll easier and have a more responsive boat. He likes the lower
: rear deck on the 700. Sure is "purty" on the water, too.: Jim
