: Hi Jim
: Wondering how the comparison went, also compared to the Q400 & Q500 ?
: Come to a decision?
: WayneHi Wayne -
Well, the Mariner II felt completely different, almost as if I was glued to the water. Very comfortable and responsive. The same conditions that felt overwhelming in the Q700 quickly became fun in the Mariner II. Within a few minutes I was looking forward to the next wave, etc. Following seas were lots of fun. The Mariner II was a WOW experience. It felt secure and predictable, even as narrow as it is. The Mariner II is in my garage.Everyone that has paddled my Q700 loves it. The bigger the paddler, the more tender it feels, the smaller the paddler, the more they like the boat. That means that a female friend who is 5'7" and 130lbs and is displacing 90lbs less than me (I figure that means the 700 is riding almost an inch higher with her in the boat) finds it more stable than me at 220lbs and 6'1". Just goes to show that you can't measure stability, etc. on overall beam and water-line beam. My Q400 is a very stable platform, ideal for fishing, photography, site-seeing. I've had it out in whitecaps with green water coming up to the cockpit in head seas and it handles it fine. Because it's got a relatively flat bottom and generous beam at 24", it can wallow around a bit in bigger water. The Q500 is a longer and narrower version of the Q400. I paddled it all day in waves I couldn't handle in the Q700. It feels very stable and secure, too and paddles efficiently. Both the Q400 and Q500 have a fair amount of freeboard...I haven't tried a wet exit/reentry in either boat. A paddling friend who owns the Q500 I've tried out has no problem rolling it.
So, the Mariner II is definitely a keeper. The Q700 is for sale, but I'm going to continue to polish my skills in that boat. It's definitely me, not the boat.
