Many people who are physically attacked are aware of the attacker before the attack happens but are too afraid to turn and face their fear. The fact is that by turning and facing their attacker and taking up an assertive posture many would have prevented the attack. Burying one's head in the sand doesn't make reality go away.
Intersections are dangerous places. However, we must pass through them at some point so it is best to face the danger head on and take the necessary steps to protect yourself, just as you said.
