: Nick, going out on different bodies of water is also a real learning
: experience, as I discovered this summer. Otsego Lake gave me beginner
: lessons about katabatic winds and the sudden squalls they kick up out of
: nowhere and the Ottawa River taught me (very gently) about currents in
: major rivers.: This summer's big learning was an incredible wilderness paddle on a glacial
: lake in the Yukon -- graduate lessons in katabatic winds, paddling in bear
: country and a "rehearsal" for being stranded in the wilderness
: -- the outfitter was several hours late picking us up in the jet boat and
: we were pinned down by wind. It was instructive watching my thought
: processes during potential emergencies. No amount of class time can
: prepare you for the adrenaline rush of seeing recent bear footprints on
: the beach or knowing that you're stranded until an emergency elsewhere has
: been resolved. As one of my wilderness preparedness books says, the best
: rescue tool is your brain and you'd better learn how it use it in
: emergencies.Yes,it's definatly a rush to be really in a wilderness area and mainly have to relay on yourself and friends to figure your way out safely.
The term "katabatic wind" is not familiar to me.
What does that refer to Pamela?
Cheers
Bert
