: ... as someone honestly concerned about safety. I know far more kayakers who
: have been seriously injured while riding a motorcycle than I know kayakers
: who have been hurt at all while kayaking. The motorcycle injuries involve
: a year or more of surgery, hospitalization and therapy and still left the
: victims permanently crippled and maimed. The kayaking injuries generally
: required a few weeks away from the water and a large bottle of Ibuprofen.: Personally I would rather risk hypothermia and a painless drowning due to my
: own stupidity, than get hit by some idiot on a cell phone in an SUV and
: spending the rest of my life in a wheelchair. I guess we all make our own
: decisions on what risks we find acceptable.Nick...
After spending some time on the Harley Forum... you are 100% correct. This is mucho dangerous. I stopped riding my Yamaha in Chicago when I first came here several years ago because I felt it was highly unsafe. Now I take my Dyna in the direction of "Out of Town"... to minimize the considerable risk.
One V-Rod rider (Hubie) was coming home the other day at 2 AM in Indiana. Some woman was drag raciong and blew a stop sign at 100 mph or more and T-boned the guy. He is with the Ghost Riders in the Sky now. There are many more of these stories on that board than death stories on this one.
I guess the object is like tennis... eliminate the unforced errors and you have the best chance to win... but no guarantees. Old Hubie did most everything right but he got blown away by the Fast and Furious lady. At least it took him less time to expire than if he had drown from hypothermia.
In sea kayaking and in motorcycling you do what you can to raise your chance of survival so you can experience the riches offered by these sports. We must be ever vigilant because one slip and the punishment is severe.
Safe Paddling!
