I was thinking aloud. Worse still I'm a WW paddler not sea. Don't take it as gospel or anything.
I believe that assymetrical blades came into being because the paddle shaft is not vertical during a forward stroke so the side of the blade above the shaft is not necessarily engaged with the water in exactly the same way as the side of the blade above the shaft. So people got the idea to make the blade assymetrical ie. have more blade area below the shaft than above (generally speaking) to try to gain the maximum forward propulsion from a forward stroke. Then they most likely made compromises to come up with a blade shape that also worked for sweeps, draws, braces whatever. With the possible exception of sprint/marathon racing paddles all paddle designs are a compromise.
As for my thought about zero feather and symmetrical blades yeah you could have zero feather and assymetrical blades but then the paddle would still have an "up and down". If I go zero feather symmetrical blades then the paddle will only have a power face and non-power face side which should make it easier to just grab and go.
Sorry for confusing explanation.
Mick
