Hello David,
I sent you an email before I saw your post. The dive was great and it's funny you mentioned the complications from pressure. We were free diving (no air) down to 50 feet, with 40 foot dives frequent, looking for bugs in our favorite secret spots that if I told you about I'd have to kill you. While down I thought to myself "I wonder if this pressure is affecting my condition." I didn't notice any worsening. Today it actually seems a little better.
I free dive for bugs because you can go down and come back up with no decompression, and you can keep going all day without Nitrogen building up in your blood. We have one spot that we paddle out to, and some we boat to. We spent the whole day diving. You could be right, I'm sure the rapid decompression from 50 feet to surface is not helping. I will say this, it's great training for paddling. Why? Well after all day holding your breath you really train your lungs to work efficiently. I have always felt that your power comes from your lungs. I have a breathing technique that I use when endurance paddling where I breathe in on the upswing, and out rapidly on the stroke. Yeah, okay that's pretty basic, but it gets your breathing in a rhythm, and I even though I'm breathing really hard I don't tire out as fast.
The diving also builds up red blood cells, kind of like high altitude mountain climbing. I guess it's like any exorcise... whatever muscle group you focus on is what you are going to build up. I think it's good to build up your diaphragm and lungs.
Hey, I just noticed I said "exorcise" instead of "exercise." Don't worry, I'm not casting out demons!
Cheers,
Malcolm
