: The only reasons anyone has ever given me for feathering in whitewater are: I
: just learned that way, I dunno.: Everyone else was.
: For punching through giant waves. ?????
: Where one is continually changing direction on whitewater, feathering for
: wind makes no sense. Shallow angles of feather don't help there anyway.Mostly, it's not for wind; more for paddling mechanics.
Most whitewater paddlers use a wider grip than most sea
kayakers and a considerably higher paddle angle. Using an
unfeathered paddle with that paddling style forces a
considerable bend in the wrist of the upper hand. I find
that a 45-degree feather just about straightens it out for
me, but it's, ummm, different strokes for different folks, so
to speak.: Bracing, back sweeps, rolling, high sculling and sculling back up are all
: impeded by a feathered paddle.: I use an unfeathered paddle in whitewater and find it works just fine.
: Why does anyone use a feathered paddle in white water?
: What are any advantages over an unfeathered paddle? Other than that is the
: way you learned, it seems natural now and you don't want to change.
: Why 90 to 70 to 60 to 45 to 30 to whatever is next? The progression seems
: apparent.I think what's happened in whitewater is that early boaters
were mostly river-runners, and they used 90-degree feathers
to make progress against upriver winds (which can be brutal
in canyons like the Grand). Worries about carpal tunnel
syndrome pushed many of us to reduce those angles, typically
to 60, and we all discovered that our non-control-side rolls
and high braces were easier with the lesser feather. The
transition of the sport from river-running to playboating
made the wind issue less important (since they're trying to
stay in one place rather than go anywhere), and feather
angles dropped some more as people figured out what worked
for their wrists.-Ken
