I don't think this is a great argument for or against unfeathered. It's mostly a matter of getting used to the gear you have. If it's feathered, you should practice until you instinctively know where your paddle blades are, if unfeathered, you should still know where they are. If you don't find you know where the blade is, feel what the paddle is doing in the water--this tactile response should tell you where the blade is, and how you need to move it so you can support your weight on it with a brace.
s
: I didn't know what feathered was until I read several posted messages. I have
: always used feathered and found it easy to get used to. It does feel
: natural when paddling. I've never tried unfeathered but would like to
: relate a situation that happened to me. One day out on rough water my kyak
: was hit from behind lifting my rudder out of the water giving me no
: control. I started to go sideways down the wave and tried to brace but in
: the confusion didn't get my paddle down flat so the brace was useless.
: Luckily I leaned out and prevented from upsetting. I think back to that
: day and can't help thinking that an unfeathered paddle would have been
: better. I don't go out on rough water alone any more and I still like my
: feathered paddle.
