: It doesn't take long to switch. You will have a couple of failed braces in
: the meanwhile and maybe a blown scull or roll on your non-control side but
: the change happens surprisingly quickly. One month after switching I couldThanks Jed.
: Despite what the unfeathered camp says (and I remember well the argument for
: unfeathered) you can feel the difference in your forward paddling speed in
: winds as low as 10 knots.Yes, this is one of the reasons I'm beginning to convert. I came into this sport paddling a narrow greenland stick, switched to euro to learn some of the BCU stuff and never went back. My euro blade is very wide, and it makes (to me) a huge difference to feather it paddling into a headwind.
And as anyone who has ever paddled with me knows, the wind is either always blowing against me, or if it is steamy hot, it blows in the same direction I'm paddling at the same speed I'm paddling.
I resisted switching to feathered for the longest time, but while in Japan, I found I just had to switch because of the always present wind. Because my bracing skills were very shaky while feathered, I would always switch back as soon as I was no longer paddling directly into the wind.
I also found switching to feathered was less of an upset to my forward stroke than when switching back to unfeathered..
