I didn't know what feathered was until I read several posted messages. I have always used feathered and found it easy to get used to. It does feel natural when paddling. I've never tried unfeathered but would like to relate a situation that happened to me. One day out on rough water my kyak was hit from behind lifting my rudder out of the water giving me no control. I started to go sideways down the wave and tried to brace but in the confusion didn't get my paddle down flat so the brace was useless. Luckily I leaned out and prevented from upsetting. I think back to that day and can't help thinking that an unfeathered paddle would have been better. I don't go out on rough water alone any more and I still like my feathered paddle.
: Sing,
: I special order my white water paddles unfeathered. I play around with
: feather angles all the time -- except in white water. There the need for
: instincive bracing and instant rolls favors sticking with ones most
: familiar feather angle.: I get teased sometimes about my funny unfeathered paddles, but it doesn't
: last. While I've been told the unfeathered paddle will get caught up when
: punching through big water, I've never had a problem (and I paddle in up
: to good sized class IV rapids).: --Tim
