why feather WW?

: I paddled unfeathered (GP) in a seakayak. Going into white water this year, I
: was concerned about confusion over blade orientation since WW paddles are
: feathered, although as some one pointed out less do than touring paddles.
: I think I may have experienced some initial confusion but nothing that was
: long term. I haven't experience any major problems bracing or rolling --
: either side -- in either a white water boat or a sea kayak, provided I
: "play" a little with the paddle before really getting on with
: the agenda. The only move that seems to take some thought is reverse sweep
: (stern to bow) on the offside in a white water boat. I have to take a
: second or tow to orient for that one.: Having said that, I prefer unfeathered. I would mind picking up a 30 degree
: white water paddle, if I can find the right size used.: sing
The only reasons anyone has ever given me for feathering in whitewater are:
I just learned that way, I dunno.
Everyone else was.
For punching through giant waves. ?????
Where one is continually changing direction on whitewater, feathering for wind makes no sense. Shallow angles of feather don't help there anyway.
Bracing, back sweeps, rolling, high sculling and sculling back up are all impeded by a feathered paddle.
I use an unfeathered paddle in whitewater and find it works just fine.
Why does anyone use a feathered paddle in white water?
What are any advantages over an unfeathered paddle? Other than that is the way you learned, it seems natural now and you don't want to change.
Why 90 to 70 to 60 to 45 to 30 to whatever is next? The progression seems apparent.Randy
