: Ok, for the last 5 years I've been an unfeathered paddler. For the last year
: I've been crossing over to feathered when paddling into the wind. I think
: I've decided to go 100% of the time, but I'll need to re-learn a lot of
: skills. Any tips fom those who have been there, done that?Robert,
I'll leave the "Feathered vs Unfeathered" argument for other people since I no longer feel strongly one way or another. But I have recently transitioned from unfeathered to feathered and can offer some insight.
The most obvious problem is regaining instinctive bracing. The best way that I know to do this is to practice paddle awareness drills with you eye's closed. The drill I used goes like this: Low brace on the right, low brace on the left, high brace on the right, high brace on the left. Repeat this a few times and repeat it during the day when you take a break from paddling forward. You may also want to practice sculling alternately on both sides to help change those muscle memories as well. Anything that causes you to switch braces (of all types) from one side to the other will work.
It doesn't take long to switch. You will have a couple of failed braces in the meanwhile and maybe a blown scull or roll on your non-control side but the change happens surprisingly quickly. One month after switching I could no longer paddle forward comfortably unfeathered. I switched 18 months ago and no longer have any concern about my instinctive bracing.
Despite what the unfeathered camp says (and I remember well the argument for unfeathered) you can feel the difference in your forward paddling speed in winds as low as 10 knots. Think about a 10 knot wind and you paddling at 4 knots into that wind. Do you think you'd feel resistance on your dry-side paddle as you push it forward into this now 14 knot wind? I bit of quick math applying this effort on every stroke for several miles as you paddle upwind and you have a serious argument for feathered paddling.
Cheers,
Jed
