If you're already venturing out in such conditions, I hope nothing you read in Deep Trouble is too shocking! I liked Deep Trouble, and recommend that everyone read it--especially new paddlers. I don't know that everyone must have it in their library, but everyone should at least borrow it and read it cover-to-cover.

Fundamentals of Kayak Navigation is a great read. You can read it once and get a lot out of it. Read it 6 months later, and there's new stuff to pick up. Even when you think you might have it all figured out, pick it up, and it's still teaching you. A super addition to your paddling library--one of the first I'd recommend.

I just picked up a used USCG Master's test pass kit...should be fun to learn what I don't know!
