Yvonne...
I live in the Chicagoland area where riding a motorcycle is a pretty chancey activity. The traffic is very heavy. The streets have lots of potholes. The drivers are very aggressive or very stupid... both very dangerous to bikers.
I have always been reluctant to ride in Chicago. My mom worked at a local hospital and she used to tell me how they mopped bikers up off the pavement every Friday and Saturday night and tried to save them in the emergency room.
Nick is right. It is probably much more dangerous than ordinary sea kayaking. But ya pay your money and take your chance. I do the best I can to minimize my risks. I am an aggressive driver but one who is constantly performing what we call SIPDE... Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, Execute. I never drink or take drugs. I don't ride if I am tired or mentally not at 100%. And I try to avoid the places that have the highest element of risk. Heck there are a lot of other places to go... much nicer places out in the country.
I guess I am not all that much different a bike rider as I am a kayaker. I view sea kayaking as a basically dangerous activity where the risk can be minimized down to an acceptable level through skill, training, planning, experience, and equipment. My definition of "acceptable" may differ from other people's views. That is normal. We all define our own limits.
Those who engage in dangerous activities without defining limits are often highly exhilarated dead extreme athletes. I don't want to be one of those. Heck I don't even like exercise!
Safe Paddling!
