Helping Hand for Fat Boats *LINK*

As I mentioned in another post, I’ve received a lot of feedback from other paddlers who e-mailed me directly with additional comments. I asked these folks if they’d share their comments on the Guillimot Board but most just asked that I pass the word along. Here are some comments in regard to the “Helping Hand” or “Hand of God” rescue:
“When practicing the hand of god a week ago, we found a few things perhaps worth noting here, as long as the subject has come up.
Gosh, the bottoms of boats are wider than when I learned the hand of god! This makes it harder to get a hand all the way over to the far side of the boat. The suggestion that a few folks made, in order to overcome this, was to push down on the close side of the boat first, with the hand further from the victim's boat; this raises the far edge of the victim's boat, making it easier to grab. Then switch the first hand to grab the victim's PFD; swing the boat upright.
As someone reminded me, the hand of works best when you do it with vigor, rather than gradually. As with a roll, try to coil and then uncoil your torso, using that action to help carry the boat upright.”
Another person posted a link to Riot Kayaks that describes the of “Hand of God” rescue in detail.
Hope this helps when people go out to practice rescues. John
