: I think you need both distance and interval work for best results, but I find
: that when I am only paddling 1-3 times a week I tend toward longer
: workouts just to get some mileage in. If I can get myself out there more
: often, I'll work in a mix of intervals, pyramids etc. along with the
: longer 1-2 hour or more paddles that I enjoy. If I were only able to get
: out for short periods at a time then I would definitely focus on interval
: work.Intervals do concentrate more breakdown/buildup exercise into a short period, so they fit a tight schedule efficiently. When I raced bikes, one fiendish CAT III did it all with a good schedule of interval workouts and enough caffeine to float a battleship. Good thing most of the races were short so he didn't have to worry about getting rid of all that diuretic.
Longer paddles are more enjoyable, and a balanced program in anything propelled by muscle ideally should include long, steady distance as well as intervals. I go paddling to enjoy navigating a body of water as well as just for a workout. Otherwise just tether yourself to a bridge across a rapid and thrash for as long as you like. Hmmm...there's a bridge across a rapid not far from my house...
