: A blunt tipped double edged knife might reduce this risk and give you the
: cutting power needed.I don't see how you would start a cut through the spray skirt with a blunt tip.
: The knife might have allowed him to pry it up. He couldn't get his hand on it
: becuase it was too deep in. Fact is that he was having no success trying
: to use his hands alone. Ultimately he was lucky that he could use his
: legs. For many, that would not be an option. So, your hanging upside down with the surf throwing you around, now you want to get the point of your knife between the rand and the underside of the coaming lip so you can do some prying. I think I would have trouble with this maneuver upright, on dry land, with good lighting. I would not waste my time.
If a knife were my last resort, I would plunge it straight down near the front of the sprayskirt and pull it back to open up a slit about 6" to 12" then drop the knife and try ripping apart the sprayskirt up to my waist using both hands. I have doubts that it would work, but it has a better chance of success than trying to jimmy the blade into a tight gap to do prying.
