Shawn,
I have to respectfully disagree. I'm really surprised to see you make this statement. Just speaking from my own experience, (I don't know anything about engineering), but the buoyancy of the paddle has a negligible effect on sculling. Same with the concave back. It's the purchase/lift of the power-face of the blade as it goes through the water (with an upward angle). I practice the technique all the time, and it works VERY well with a Euro type paddle.
Bob: Yes, it's not so much the material itself, but the shape and volume
: displacement of the blade.: Most plastic and glass Euro paddles are made with very thin blades that have
: no positive buoyancy, and a concave back.: A lot of wood Euros, and new foam-core ones like the Werner Kalliste and
: Double Diamond have a lot better volume--more buoyancy and more lift.: By its very nature a GP has buoyancy and lift...lots of positive
: displacement. I'm guessing you have a Superior Kayaks CF GP. Material
: doesn't matter...it'll perform just about the same as a wood GP.: I'm not saying that GP's are totally superior. Just that they're better at
: this sort of thing than 95% of the Euros out there. Before Nick argues
: with me on this one: it's not that the Euro can't have as much lift
: or buoyancy as the GP. Most just don't.: If you've rolled before, the new gear won't be terribly difficult. Go for
: it!!: Shawn
