The knife

John...
Why didn't you cut yourself out? Take your knife and slash that skirt from your belly out to the coaming and out you go. I carry a double edged knife with one completely serrated edge and one completely standard edge. Both sides are a sharp as razors. I can use either side as conditions warrant. If necessary, I could actually saw my way out of a pin... though that would not be possible without a continuous air supply which you didn't have.
Your knife might also have served to pry up the rand allowing you to use the side pull technique Brian alluded to.
Sometimes, we have a built in aversion to trashing our equipment as if it were more valuable than our lives. This may not be true in your case but many of us feel this way even if we never verbalize it. We all need to be ready to sacrifice equipment in a heartbeat... without hesitation... to save our lives.
Safe Paddling!
