Randy, I participated in a scoop rescue practice once (as the victim, fittingly enough!) but I've never practiced it myself. You can be sure it's on my list of things to do.
But even if the woman had reached me and successfully performed a scoop, I'm still not sure she could have done much to save me (assuming that I'd already blacked out and filled my lungs with salt water.) The real problem would be getting me to breathe again. Perhaps she could have tried some sort of a bear hug chest compression in hopes it would force some water out of my lungs and trigger a convulsion in me to force the rest out. If I'd just blacked out a few seconds earlier, there's some chance that might have worked.
Another problem is that we were still far out in the soup and the waves, though broken, weren't small. On top of that, I was locked into my boat. Unless the rescuer was extremely strong, I'm not sure they could have popped my skirt open while trying to hold me upright with incoming waves to complicate matters. Not a very promising scenario.
At any rate, I definitely want to add the scoop rescue to my regular practice list as there are other scenarios where it would be the only option. Thanks for your input, John
