: Id never leave a kayak alone and swim for shore. The fins were seen as an
: assist in bringing an unrightable craft to land. Mind you, take this from
: a guy who hasnt begun his rolling program yet but does a lot of skin
: diving.
You'll probably find rolling easy, because you're obviously quite comfortable underwater. My best "success" in teaching the roll was with a buddy who is a SCUBA diver. Hedge your bet; wear your favorite mask or goggles so it "feels" most like you're already used to...then just learn the motions.
: I was just surprised to see the paddlefloat selfrescue
: which is supposed to be backup for a failed roll, top out in 3' waves.Hmm...haven't tried it in 3' waves...guess I'll have to!!
: Seems useless when u need it most.
Yes, it would...but a lot of novices fall in in 6" or 1' waves, too.

: PS: Paddlefloat roll makes sense - funny that i hadnt read about that in
: tragic circumstances. Maybe it might have made the difference - or these
: paddlers forgot to bring one along. I like the idea of a foam paddlefloat
: bungeed behind the cockpit for quick access.Yes! I think Randy is a huge proponent of these floats. I'm working on a foam "rolling" float, which is more streamlined and takes up a little less space. Better for rolling, but worse for the standard rescue.
