: Whats really scarey to me is that Ive read that the paddle float rescue, in
: the event of a capsize naturally, begins to fail when waves reach three
: feet or more. So say your roll doesnt work either,So you try another roll. Then another. Then you try sculling to the surface. Only then do you bail.
: and now the paddle
: float fails... whjat nextThen you try the re-enter and roll, or the re-enter and paddlefloat roll. Or you try the cowboy scramble.
You're paddling with a partner, right? A T-rescue is much easier than all the above listed options (save the roll!) and puts you in a dry boat, ready to paddle. You're not paddling in 3' waves without a partner, without multiple rolling options, or without multiple rescue options, are you?
You need to develop lots of options before you venture out into places you might encounter 3' waves.
:...fire the flare gun????
How about using your VHF to ask for an assist from a nearby fishing vessel? Climb on your partner's back deck? (You could use your fins here to help her/him).
Don't give up and ditch your boat so quickly. Fins are an option, but you've plenty of other options, that, with practice, you can develop skills that will make any capsize an annoyance rather than an emergency.
: Times like that, and I
: know Ive caught flak over this, it makes sense to have a pair of fins on
: board to expidite the exit to shore. Ofcourse, there are those times where
: the shore is 10 miles out I guess, but man, anything to save the
: humiliation of firing off an "I F--ked Up" Flare.Having to ditch your $1,000+ boat and swimming to shore is better than launching a $40 flare? Either way, you'll be a little embarrased, but should first and foremost feel lucky to be alive.
