I have a fav spot online - Weatherunderground.com - where I get a terrific marine forecast. Ive been monitoring the water temps from long island sound out to as far east as montauk point. Would you believe, the water is 50F off montauk, while 70F in new haven harbor? A little understanding of the underwater topography explains it...
New Haven is full of shoals, and the water just sits there like a lake. Off montauk its as virtuually offshore as you can get and still be on land.
What a difference tho.
